Nacht und Traume, often translated as “night and dreams” is a famous song composed by Franz Schubert in 1823. It was originally written for voice and piano and based on a poem by Matthäus von Collin. Around this time, Schubert had begun to experience the degrading effects of syphillis that would eventually cause his death. “Collin’s brief poem inspired one of Schubert’s most slow-moving, serene contemplations—and one of his most challenging for the singer [or cellist], who must sustain its lines at a pianissimo dynamic throughout. The piano maintains a soothing rocking motion with a gorgeous harmonic shift at the outset of the second part to set up the image of dreams eavesdropping with pleasure” (Jane Jaffe). “Holy night, you sink down; the dreams flow down, too, like your moonlight through the rooms, through the people’s silent chests. They listen softly with desire; they call, when day awakens: Come back, holy night! Sweet dreams, come back!
