Robert Schumann’s Träumerei (Op. 15, No. 7) has a rich and captivating history that makes it as one of his most well-known works. Träumerei, often translated as “dreaming” is the seventh piece in a set of solo piano compositions titled Kinderszenen (Children’s Tales). It was composed in 1838 and took inspiration from an impertinent comment made by his wife Clara that he “sometimes seemed like a child”. Schumann himself described the set of pieces as more gentle, cheerful, and melodic than his earlier works. Interestingly enough, the Träumerei came to fame in 1945 when a Russian radio station chose it to be broadcast across the entire Soviet Union following the surrender of Nazi Germany that closed World War II.

Four decades after those events, Russian-American pianist Vladimir Horowitz gave a recital in Moscow and played the Träumerei as an encore. Many of the older audience members began to shed tears due to memories of the piece being played at the end of the war (as shown in this video of Horowitz’s performance, click here to watch). Another famous Russian musician, Mstislav Rostropovich, cherished the piece and recorded it for cello and piano in 1956 (listen by clicking here). This arrangement of Träumerei for cello duet maintains the same emotional characteristics as the original and gives the piece a new perspective with the sound of the two cellos.

“That kind of epiphany, that slight change — the one telling chord, the one moment that sums up all the emotion — is what’s so perfect about Träumerei. It’s the last step of dream world before you come back to reality.”
